WHY YOU SHOULD BE PRACTICING JAL NETI

July 06, 2020 WHY YOU SHOULD BE PRACTICING JAL NETI Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Jal neti is an ancient ayurvedic practice, derived from the Sanskrit word “jal” which means “water” and “neti” which means “to guide”. This practice basically involves guiding water through the nostrils, to reach the airways and nasal cavities and cleanse them. This is also known as nasal irrigation and is performed using a neti pot. This practice is rapidly gaining popularity in the west due to its simplicity and proven medical benefits. It helps remove microbes and mucous from the nasal cavities, helping prevent colds, throat infections, sinuses and, also improves respiration. HOW TO PRACTICE JAL NETI Jal neti is done using a specially designed pot known as the neti pot. It is available in different materials and consists of a small bulbous kettle like portion with a spout attached to one side. How to do Jal neti Cleanse the neti pot thoroughly with warm water before usage. Mix one teaspoon of non-iodized salt for half-litre of water for the irrigation solution. This mixture is isotonic, like human blood. Jal neti is typically performed in kagasana (crow pose). However, it produces the same results even when done over a sink, standing. Choose a comfortable position before you begin. If you are suffering from a stuffy nose, identify which nostril seems clearer and start with that side. Gently place the spout of the neti pot inside this nostril in such a way that the tip of the spout is not blocked from pouring. Tilt your head to a 45-degree angle and slowly pour the saline solution inside the nostril, ensuring all breathing is done through your mouth. Do not inhale through the nose. Relax, and allow the water to naturally come out of the other nostril. Ensure the neti pot is fully sealed by the nostril to prevent any leakage. This allows all mucus and bacteria to be flushed out. Once half the solution has been used, slowly remove the neti pot. Hold the head in the same bent posture and allow the rest of the water to come out. Gently blow your nose to flush out any remaining solution. If it drips down your throat, spit it out. Repeat the steps with the leftover solution through the other nostril. Dry your nostrils by bending forward and allowing gravity to draw out any remaining traces of the saline solution. You can also try sniffing rapidly to bring up any excess water. Rinse the neti pot with mild soap and warm water and allow it to air dry. Do not share your neti pot. BENEFITS OF JAL NETI Removes dirt, bacteria and unclean mucus from the nose. Helps drainage of the sinus cavities, preventing infections. Reduces chances of sinusitis, sore throats, coughs, inflammation of the tonsils and the common cold. Helps improve respiration for those suffering from asthma and bronchitis. Helps prevent headaches, migraines, and has a cooling and calming effect on the nervous system and the mind. Promotes better vision by flushing the tear ducts. Can help reduce the possibility of tinnitus by clearing the ear canals. Improves sensitivity to smell. HOW TO FOLLOW AN AYURVEDIC DIET

June 19, 2020 HOW TO FOLLOW AN AYURVEDIC DIET Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Ayurveda is firmly rooted in the belief that overall health and wellbeing all starts with good digestion. Digestive health is an indicator of how the body is functioning, and 3000 years of this science have shown time and again that a good diet is the best way to a healthy life. Vedic texts even state that the right food is medicine when consumed correctly. All human bodies are not the same. Ayurveda classifies people’s bodies based on the 3 doshas. Depending on certain key characteristics, people may be predominantly Vata, Kapha or Pitta dosha. Some people might be a combination of 2 of the doshas as well. This is a major factor to take into consideration when planning meals. Depending on your dosha, a diet conducive to appeasing it is the best way to overall fitness, strength and lifelong health. Below are some factors to consider: According to Ayurveda, every meal must have all 6 tastes : salty, sweet, sour, bitter, astringent and pungent. This does not mean the meals should be overpoweringly flavored, but rather that there should be a balance between the components which create a filling, yet healthy meal. Natural, organic food is always advisable. Because preservatives, GMO’s, etc. cause accumulation of toxins in the body, they can not only affect digestion, but will invariably slow down metabolism, reducing immunity in the long run. Meals which are rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the key aspects of an ayurvedic diet. Steamed, sautéed or cooked vegetables are preferable as these are easily digestible when compared to raw, uncooked vegetables. This is particularly important for the morning and night meals. Lunch can include a salad with fresh vegetables, as the digestive fire or agni is at its peak during noon time, promoting faster digestion. Ayurveda makes use of herbs and spices in various medicines, all of which are natural and holistic cures for numerous diseases. These spices can be added to regular diet as well to boost immunity, increase digestive health and regulate body functions. Drinking habits play an important role in maintaining health. Ayurveda recommends drinking warm water or room temperature water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Cool water is not advisable unless you have a Kapha dosha body. Similarly, regular intake of warm, hearty soups; enriched herbal teas can all help ease the load on the stomach during digestion and bring regularity to your daily life. Fruit juices are also good, however consume in moderation as most fruits contain natural sugars. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking. These are responsible for bad digestive health and simply by cutting them out of your lifestyle, you will experience lightness and better health from day 1. An ayurvedic diet is wholesome, and nutritious without cutting any corners. Ayurveda does not recommend any fad weight loss diets, or diets heavy in one particular nutrient, proteins, carbohydrates and so on. These might produce immediate results, like reducing bloating, or helping lose water weight but might cause detrimental effects to the digestive system over time. Ayurveda approaches health by understanding the balance of mind, body and soul. If the mind is in turmoil or under stress, this can cause disruption in the body’s functioning as well. So always be mindful when eating, and chew slowly. Avoid usage of electronic devices during meals and be fully conscious of what you are consuming. This will ensure your body accepts the food and processes it. By following the above tips, it is easy to improve your life, simply by changing your eating habits. An ayurvedic diet will open your eyes to a number of organic food choices which you may have otherwise avoided due to over indulgence in snacks, fast food, fried food and more. This type of eating will refresh your body from the inside out, healing your digestive system, and protecting you from infections, toxins, and disease. Once you try this, and experience the medicinal and therapeutic effects of the same, there’s every chance that you will stick with it for the long run. Tags: ayurveda herbs ayurvedic tips diet health
AYURVEDA FOR GASTROINTESTINAL HEALTH DURING COVID-19

June 12, 2020 AYURVEDA FOR GASTROINTESTINAL HEALTH DURING COVID-19 Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Ayurveda has always been firmly rooted in the belief that healthy living promotes healthy life. For this reason, it is absolutely essential to practice an ayurvedic lifestyle to ensure perfect functioning of all the systems in the body. The gastrointestinal system is very important, and even more so during the time of the coronavirus. By keeping all our systems working smoothly, the human body’s immune system also functions without a hitch. This helps keep infections at bay. Ayurveda prescribes certain practices which can help boost gastrointestinal health. Eating too much junk food, excessive consumption of food, eating cold meals and unhealthy habits can lead to constipation, bloating and more, all of which leave the body more susceptible to attack by diseases. Below are a few ayurvedic methods which will help keep your gastrointestinal system in prime condition. Regulating food intake is one way to keep the body fit. Over consumption due to quarantine and easy access to a variety of food must be curbed. This is because, during times of the pandemic, in order to promote immunity, it is essential to keep the gastric fire burning constantly. This can be done by maintaining a diet of less food than usual. By not completely satiating hunger, the gastric fire or agni remains burning, and this promotes digestion, stomach health and has anti-inflammatory properties as well. Increase intake of Rasam. This is a dish which greatly improves digestion. By regularly drinking Rasam, the stomach is kept balanced and healthy. Instead of Rasam, a soup may be had as well. The necessary ingredients are below. RASAM Use tomatoes while making the Rasam and replace tamarind with the Indian gooseberry or lemon. Add generous quantities of ginger, long pepper, black pepper, curry leaves, turmeric, and green chillies as necessary. Avoid ginger if you have a sensitive stomach. SOUP Using tomatoes or Courgette as the base, add in small quantities of common nettle, celery root, purple onion, horseradish and ginger. Again, avoid ginger if you have a sensitive stomach. There are special herbal decoctions or teas which can be consumed daily to help the gastrointestinal system. This can soothe the intestines and also allow the body to go through the steps of digestion without gastric, heartburn, bloating, diarrhea and more. The recipes are given below. HERBAL TEA USING INDIAN HERBS Ajwain – 10g Jeera – 5g Black cumin – 10g Coriander seeds -25g Black pepper – 5g Long pepper – 5g Wash and crush the herbs. Add 2 liters of water and boil for 10 minutes. Filter and store. USING WESTERN HERBS Yarrow flower – 10g Mint – 5g Common sage – 5g Breckland thyme – 5g Lipa leaves – 5g Rose hips – 30g Boil 3 liters of water. Add the herbs and allow them to steep while boiling for a other 10 minutes. Filter and store. Avoid constipation by drinking a concoction of plums daily. Soak 30-50g of dried plums in 300 ml of water for about 4 hours. Blend it and drink. This will ensure daily regular bowel movements.. Another important consideration is to avoid drinking and smoking completely during this time. This allows the body to function at its best without any intrusions. It is also advisable to consume a purely vegetarian diet if possible. Inculcating the above formulae in to life can help prevent possible coronavirus infection. Lead an ayurvedic way of life and feel the change in your body. Ayush provides consultation with skilled ayurvedic practitioners to provide the best Ayurvedic remedies and practices for you. TONGUE SCRAPING FOR BETTER HEALTH HEALTH (JIHWA PRAKSHALANA)

June 6, 2020 TONGUE SCRAPING FOR BETTER HEALTH HEALTH (JIHWA PRAKSHALANA) Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Ayurveda prescribes numerous practices which when incorporated in day to day life, promote better living and better health. Tongue scraping, known in Ayurveda as Jihwa Prakshalana, is one such practice with numerous health benefits. The western world is also catching on to the proven results shown by tongue scraping, something which has been a part of ayurveda for centuries! Tongue scraping is a way of removing toxins from the tongue every morning and night along with our daily brushing activity. The reason for this is the fact that the tongue has a thin film of toxins accumulating every day on its surface. This might manifest itself in the form of a white coating. Depending on dosha, the colour may vary. Kapha dosha is often indicated by a thick, white coating, pitta dosha is often yellow and vata dosha is seen as a brown film. These accumulated toxins are called “ama” in Ayurveda. The tongue is believed to be indicative of the entire human body according to ayurvedic texts. Each part of the tongue is representative of one part of the body. Therefore, by scraping the tongue, it is possible to evaluate overall health and body functioning. It also stimulates the various parts of the body. Clogged taste buds can also cause weird food cravings and dull down the taste of food drastically. BENEFITS OF TONGUE SCRAPING Tongue scraping has been proven to reduce bacteria in the mouth. Merely brushing the tongue with a toothbrush does not have the same effectiveness. A tongue scraper removes about 80% more ama than a regular toothbrush. It leads to fresher breath and overall improvement in mouth hygiene. Taste buds are cleansed thereby improving perception of taste, allowing us to choose the right food to eat without being obstructed by ama. Improves digestion. This is because the tongue recognizes the food being consumed and prompts the brain on how to break it down. With ama coating the tongue, the tongue is not always able to identify the right food and this might cause disruption to digestion or poor digestive process. It boosts immunity by removing bacteria every morning to prevent reabsorption of toxins into the body. Tongue scraping is also an effective way of tracking health. The type of ama is indicative of any imbalance in doshas, inappropriate diet, and more. HOW TO SCRAPE THE TONGUE Use a stainless steel or copper tongue scraper. Avoid plastic ones are these are harder to maintain. As soon as you wake up, before brushing your teeth, use the tongue scraper over your tongue and scrape backwards and forwards along the length of the tongue. The toxins will be caught in the scraper. Rinse the tongue scraper after every iteration. Repeat this about 10 times. Rinse the mouth with water and follow up with brushing and flossing. Oil pulling is also recommended to further deep clean the mouth and remove all traces of toxins. Tags: ayurvedic lifestyle ayurvedic tips boost immunity
