Some days can be extremely tiring. A multitude of reasons contribute to exhaustion and burnout. A slow and sluggish lifestyle is another aspect which contributes to lack of productivity and excessive procrastination. Ayurveda is an ancient science which has drawn the parallels between mental and physical health. Using this knowledge, there are a few simple ways which can help improve productivity without being too strenuous to incorporate in day-to-day life. Try them to experience a change in the way you live.

  • Wake up early. Waking up with the sun has long since been attributed to an active body and mind. And with good reason. Waking at 6 before the sun has risen fully is a great way to stimulate the mind and refresh the body. People who wake early see drastically improved levels of activity and enhanced productivity as well. The reason for this is linked to the fact that 6-10 AM in the morning is dominantly kapha time. Excessive kapha dosha imbalance in the body leads to laziness and mental fog. Beat this by waking early.
  • The regular routine of most people is devoid of enough physical activity. The stressful and over-planned nature of modern lifestyle has created a gaping hole in the human need to move. The body and mind both benefit immensely from this. For this reason, Ayurveda recommends yoga as a way to gently stretch muscles, strengthen the body and regulate body functions. However, working an office job and setting aside a workout session every day is not enough. The need for physical movement is constant. Sitting at a desk without any activity can cause accumulation of ama. Set aside a few minutes every couple hours to get up and stretch. This gets the prana in your body flowing and boosts energy levels as well. Digestion, alertness, focus and concentration are all improved by making this small change.
  • Never skip your morning meal. Ayurveda recommends an early dinner before turning in at night. This means your body undergoes a night long fast which rejuvenates and cleanses the gastrointestinal tract and gut. However, this must be broken each morning with a hearty and healthy breakfast. Skipping breakfast has become a norm in the stressful morning routine of most people. However, this is extremely detrimental to productivity. A body which lacks nutrition and nourishment becomes weak and unresponsive. An unhealthy body leads to an unhappy mind. With this in mind, ensure you set aside some time every morning to have a mindful meal. Avoid fast food and go for power foods such as nuts, fruits, and some dairy.

  • When productivity takes a hit, most people reach for their dose of caffeine. However, Ayurveda notes that this is the worst possible way to boost performance. Instead, sip on herbal ayurvedic teas. These can be made simply with kitchen spices and herbs. Ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, tulsi, rosemary, turmeric can all be used to make hot teas. They rejuvenate the body, mind and soul and make it easy to run through the day.
