Pain, in its various forms, can greatly impact our quality of life, starts off V.C. Ajith Kumar, Director and Principal Ayurveda Consultant.  While there are several conventional methods to alleviate pain, many individuals are turning to alternative and holistic approaches. “Ayurveda offers a treasure trove of natural remedies for pain relief,” says the renowned Ayurveda consultant. Let us explore the world of Ayurvedic herbs and their potential to provide safe and effective relief from pain.

Turmeric

Turmeric, known as “haldi” in Ayurveda, is a vibrant yellow spice with potent anti-inflammatory properties. “Its active compound, curcumin, has been extensively studied for its capacity to diminish pain and inflammation. Consuming turmeric in the form of golden milk or adding it to your meals can provide relief for conditions like arthritis, joint pain, and muscle soreness,” says the Ayurveda Consultant at Ayurvedic Singapore.

How to use:

Turmeric paste: You can create a turmeric paste by mixing turmeric powder with water or coconut oil to form a thick consistency. Apply this paste topically to the affected area and gently massage it into the skin. Cover it with a clean cloth and leave it on for 20-30 minutes before rinsing off. This method is particularly useful for localized pain relief, such as joint pain or muscle soreness.

Ginger

Ginger, another popular Ayurvedic herb, possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The Ayurvedic Consultant at Ayurvedic Singapore, says, “It is particularly effective in easing muscle pain and reducing inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.” Consuming ginger tea or incorporating fresh ginger into your meals can help alleviate pain and promote overall well-being.

How to use:

Ginger compress: A ginger compress can be beneficial for localized pain relief. Grate fresh ginger root and wrap it in a clean cloth or cheesecloth. Dip the cloth in hot water to moisten it, wring out the excess water, and apply it to the affected area. Leave the compress on for 15-20 minutes. The warmth and properties of ginger can help reduce muscle pain, joint pain, and headaches.

Ginger oil massage: Ginger essential oil should be diluted with a carrier oil. You can use coconut or jojoba oil and used for a relaxing massage. Before massing on to the skin, mix a few drops of ginger oil with the carrier oil. The warming and anti-inflammatory properties of ginger oil gives relief from muscle and joint pain.

Boswellia

Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to address pain and inflammation. Ayurveda Consultant at Ayurveda Singapore states, “The resin from the Boswellia tree contains potent anti-inflammatory compounds that can relieve joint pain, back pain, and sports injuries. Boswellia supplements are available in the form of capsules or as a topical cream for localized pain relief.”

How to use:

Topical boswellia cream: Boswellia-based topical creams or balms can be applied on to the affected area for localized pain relief. These creams often contain a combination of Boswellia extract and other soothing ingredients. You can gently massage the cream on the skin until absorbed. This method is particularly useful for joint pain, back pain, or sports injuries.

Boswellia infused oil: You can make your own Boswellia-infused oil by adding Boswellia resin to a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil. Crush the resin into small pieces and place it in a jar filled with the carrier oil. Allow it to infuse for several weeks, shaking the jar occasionally. Once ready, strain the oil and apply it topically to the affected area for pain relief.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, a renowned adaptogenic herb, offers a range of health benefits, including pain relief. This herb helps reduce stress and anxiety, which can contribute to chronic pain. Ayurvedic Consultant at Ayurvedic Singapore says, “Ashwagandha has been found to have analgesic properties, making it beneficial for conditions like fibromyalgia and nerve-related pain. Consuming ashwagandha in powdered form or as a supplement can aid in pain management.”

How to use:

Ashwagandha oil or topical applications: Ashwagandha oil can be used topically by spreading it onto the affected area for localized pain relief. You can either purchase Ashwagandha-infused oil or make your own by infusing Ashwagandha root in a carrier oil like coconut or sesame oil. Apply the oil gently into the skin until absorbed. This method may be particularly helpful for muscle soreness, joint pain, or tension headaches.

Clove

Clove, commonly used as a spice, is a powerful herb with analgesic properties. Ayurvedic Consultant at Ayurvedic Singapore says, “It contains eugenol, a natural compound known for its pain-relieving effects. Clove oil or clove-infused balms can be applied topically to relieve toothaches, headaches, and muscle pain. However, it’s important to dilute clove oil properly before using it on the skin.”

How to use:

Clove oil: Clove oil is a highly concentrated form of cloves and can be used topically for pain relief. You should dilute a few drops of clove oil with coconut or almond oil to avoid skin irritation. Apply the diluted clove oil to the affected area. You can massage it lightly into the skin. Clove oil can help alleviate toothaches, headaches, and muscle pain. However, it’s important to use clove oil in moderation and avoid applying it directly to the skin without dilution.

Clove-infused oil: You can make your own clove-infused oil by combining whole cloves with a carrier oil such as olive or grapeseed oil. Crush a handful of cloves and add them to the carrier oil. Allow the mixture to sit in a cool, dark place for a few weeks to allow the oil to absorb the properties of the cloves. Strain the oil and use it for massage or topical application to relieve pain and inflammation.

Holy Basil

Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is revered in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties. Ayurvedic Consultant at Ayurvedic Singapore says, “It possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, making it beneficial for managing headaches, migraines, and general pain.” Consuming tulsi tea or incorporating fresh basil leaves into your diet can help reduce pain and inflammation.

How to use:

Holy basil essential oil: Holy Basil essential oil can be used topically for pain relief. Dilute a few drops of Holy Basil essential oil with coconut oil or a carrier oil, like almond oil, and gently massage it into the affected area. This method can provide relief from muscle pain, joint pain, or headaches. However, it’s important to use essential oils in moderation and perform a patch test before applying them to the skin.

Incorporating Ayurvedic herbs into your lifestyle can provide a holistic approach to pain relief. However, it’s essential to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or Ayurveda consultant before starting any herbal regimen, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions or are taking medications. Ayurvedic Consultant at Ayurvedic Singapore says, “Herbs work differently for each individual, and it may take time to find the right combination and dosage for optimal pain relief.” Embracing the wisdom of Ayurveda alongside a healthy lifestyle can empower you to find natural and sustainable relief from pain.
