Ayurveda is all about listening to nature and taking care of you based on the dosha. Ayurveda considers food as a way to get swasthyam, and hence besides what we eat, how we eat also becomes essential. Ayurvedic practitioners suggest practicing five steps to improve digestion.

If you are suffering from bloating, acidity and indigestion, include the steps one at a time. In a week, you’ll notice a change for the better. Start one habit on day 1 and move on to 2, 3, and 4 while following the previous steps.

Our digestion has a direct relationship with our emotions. Emotional eating or bingeing is harmful. Do not eat when you are angry, bored, or depressed. When you are emotionally charged, you will not be able to have proper digestion. Instead of resorting to emotional eating, process your emotions. You can meditate, journal, talk to a friend or go for a walk.

Mindful eating:

Start eating by offering gratitude for your food. You can close your eyes and say thanks. By tapping your thumb or alternate nostril breathing, you can calm your system.

Do not multitask while eating. Do not talk or scroll through messages on the phone. Chew your food well and engage all your senses and enjoy every morsel.

Timing of the meal:

Everyone has a natural rhythm to their bodies. Eat your meals on time. It is said that your largest meal should be lunch when the sun is at its peak because digestion is said to be strongest then. Make your dinner a light one and eat it at least 3 hours before bed. Avoid snacking and leave a gap of four hours between meals.

Avoid cold liquids:

Consume food at room temperature. You can sip hot water or warm liquids while having food. But do not consume large quantities of liquids along with food.

Combo matters:

Some fruits cannot be eaten along with food. When incompatible foods are combined, it is said that they would turn toxic to the body. Fruits should be eaten alone, either one hour before or two hours after food. When combining two fruits, always combine sweet with sweet and sour with sour and not vice-versa.

Spices:

Include spices that can improve metabolism. Spices like ginger, cumin, cinnamon, and black pepper are known as hot spices that suit Vata plus Kapha body types. Cooling spices for Pitta are coriander, cilantro, cardamom, and clove.

Now that you’ve understood the five steps of healthy eating don’t wait further. Give a beginning today!
