CONGESTION RELIEF WITH AYURVEDA

CONGESTION RELIEF

March 31, 2020 CONGESTION RELIEF WITH AYURVEDA Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Nothing can be worse than a stuffy nose, blocked airways and persistent coughs. These symptoms are all the body’s way of saying something is not right. Caused either by seasonal allergies, bacterial infections, or a more sinister flu, nasal congestion can ruin more than just your mood. Pollution, inhalation of dust, pollen and fur can all cause colds. However sometimes, colds can progress further and escalate into a throat infection, chest congestion and cause difficulty in breathing. Most people shrug off a cold and go about their usual activities; however, this can prove to be extremely risky as without proper relief, sinus inflammation, severe coughs can all present themselves. While there are several cures for colds including natural substances like honey, lemon and ginger, as well as OTC drugs which can cause some relief, the best way to keep colds at bay is by ayurvedic therapy. WHAT IS NASYAM? Nasyam is an ayurvedic treatment which involves pouring gently warmed medicated ghee or oil as per the patient’s condition slowly into the nostrils one by one. The head is kept tilted backwards to allow the herbal remedy to deeply penetrate the sinuses and circulate through the vessels, reducing inflammation and thinning the mucous membranes. The procedure is often accompanied by gentle massage of the shoulders, hands and can be deeply relaxing. NASYAM FOR CONGESTION RELIEF Nasyam helps treat excessive kapha dosha in the body. In simple terms, this implies the overall body heat which can lead to conditions such as sinus, headaches, and colds. When partaking in the Nasyam therapy, there is a cooling effect, which helps cause immediate relief from symptoms. This is not only effective in treating colds and coughs, but can also act as a preventive measure when performed regularly. Nasyam is often prescribed by Ayurveda professionals to tackle all problems of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). At the first sign of a cold or cough, undergoing Nasyam can stop the infection in its tracks. ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF NASYAM Nasyam therapy also aids in relieving pressure in the head, cheeks and face, thereby reducing puffiness and promoting fast drainage of sinus cavities. Since the herbal oils penetrate deeply into the body, especially near the head, it can cause immediate clear-headedness and relieve stress. Nasyam refreshes the body and mind thoroughly and can be done regularly to see prolonged benefits. The body also feels cooler and more comfortable post this therapy. OTHER AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS Problems such as colds, headaches and sinusitis can be treated by applying lepanam on the forehead and herbal dhoompana. In addition to this, adding regular ayurvedic practices such as Gandoosham (gargling of medicinal herbal liquid) and Kabalam (oil pulling) to your daily routine can help prevent congestion, cold and flu. During the flu season, look no further than Ayurveda for all the solutions to your nasal problems.

EYE STRAIN

Eye Strain

March 26, 2020 EYE STRAIN Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles The dawn of the 21st century sees everyone opening their eyes to a bright screen every single day. Technology has made life easier and advanced by leaps and bounds, however, this comes with a few damaging side-effects as well. Our eyes are the most affected due to prolonged exposure to computers, mobile phones, tablets, televisions, smart watches and more. More and more people are using their devices for about 10-12 hours a day, and this bodes ill for long term eye health. The habit of falling asleep to a screen is so widespread among all age groups and can slowly cause damage to eyes. Ayurvedic therapy can help relieve the pressure of eye strain. There are numerous symptoms which could signify that the eyes are suffering from over-exposure to bright screens and excessive screen time. This includes: Blurred vision Dry, itchy eyes Watery eyes Double vision Sensitivity to light Though the light emitted from screens themselves do not cause eye strain and other symptoms, there are certain patterns into which our eyes fall which are detrimental to vision. Blinking The average human blinks about 12-15 times a minute. Every time the eye blinks, the surface of the eye is coated in a thin film of tears, which keeps the eye hydrated and lubricated during movement. When staring at a screen, the number of blinks per minute goes down to about 6-8 times a minute. This causes dry eye, leading to an itchy scratchy feeling and in some cases, the eye, in an attempt to moisten the eyes, can excessively tear up as well. Angle of Vision While reading, the average human looks downward at the text. In this angle, the eye is partially closed by the eyelid, cutting down the amount of light the eye is exposed to. However, with laptops and computers the main media used in offices, a more direct head-on angle is used while working. The over-exposure can cause the eyes to tire easily. This might cause more dangerous vision problems over a period of time. Screen Distance The average distance between the screen and eyes is about 12.5-14 inches. This is much lesser than the distance when reading traditional text, such as a book or newspaper. The close proximity can cause the eyes to almost go cross-eyed while reading which puts immense stress on the eyes. Eventually, this can lead to difficulty in focussing on text or objects which are far away due to eye strain. Blue Light All devices emit blue light, which is not very harmful during the day. But, with an increasing number of people staring at their phone screen just before dropping off to sleep, this raises cause for concern. The human body is regulated into a regular sleep cycle by the production of melanin. A reduction in melanin in the body can lead to sleeplessness. Therefore, it is ideal to avoid usage of devices before bedtime in order to get a restful night of deep sleep. NETRA THARPANAM FOR HEALTHY EYES Netra tharpanam is an ayurvedic therapy in which medicated oil or ghee is poured over the eyes. The eyes are allowed to rest for about 60 minutes in the ghee. This is used to treat an imbalance in Vata dosha which manifests itself in the eyes. The treatment helps cool the eyes and heals it from the harmful effects of staring at screens. It also lubricates, hydrates and soothes the eyes, alleviating symptoms of dry eye, itchiness and redness. All impurities are flushed out of the eyes and leave them feeling brighter and clearer. Netra tharpanam helps clear the mind and relax the body. Another treatment which helps with eye-related issues include Shirovasti, which can cool the head and eyes. Takradhara, Shirodhara and Thalapothichil also target the head and promote good vision and healthy eyes. Ayush offers the best ayurvedic treatments to keep your vision 100/100 all while ensuring utmost rest and rejuvenation.

DETOX

HERBAL STEAM BATH

March 26, 2020 DETOX Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Herbal steam bath is an ayurvedic practice in which the body is exposed to herb-infused steam. This causes the individual to sweat profusely, and has numerous detoxifying effects. It is a cleansing therapy, which opens up the pores and flushes toxins from the body. It helps in balancing the Kapha- Vata- Pitta doshas and has an overall calming effect. Herbal steam bath aids with detoxing in a variety of ways: SKIN Skin problems such as eczema, acne, can be triggered by accumulation of toxins. In addition, almost all indoor areas use air conditioners, which can also cause damage to skin by drying it out excessively, leading to rashes and wrinkles in the long run. The effects of aging are also speeded up as a result of smoke, and other pollutants in the air. Benefits – Herbal steam bath allows the skin to breathe, by enlarging pores. All toxins which have accumulated are removed and the excessive sweating cleanses the surface of the skin. In addition to this, it rehydrates the skin, leaving it soft and plump, removing the damage caused as a result of dehydration and pollution. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Allergic reactions and asthma are becoming all the more common, due to increasing levels of pollutants in the air. Just like skin dries out due to constant air conditioning, the mucous membrane can get irritated very easily leading to dry cough and discomfort while breathing. Benefits – The sweat induced by herbal steam bath moistens the inner surfaces of airways, thinning the mucous thereby making it easy to breathe. It also soothes all irritation and eases the symptoms of asthma. It gives immediate relief to those suffering from colds and coughs and flushes all toxins which may have been inhaled. SINUSES Sinuses can get stuffy and congested due to suspended dust particles in the air. This can lead to build up of pressure in the sinuses which can cause extreme pain. Headaches and tooth aches are also sometimes caused due to sinus pressure. Benefits – Sinus inflammation is drastically reduced by undergoing a herbal steam bath. The penetrative steam removes all toxins from the sinus glands and leads to easy drainage. Congestion relief is another advantage of this ayurvedic procedure. STRESS In the modern world, most people are constantly in a state of stress due to work pressures, family obligations, financial crises and more. This is highly detrimental to the body, both physically and mentally. In the long run, stress can make individuals more prone to falling sick and also lead to more dangerous mental issues such as depression and anxiety. Benefits – The herbal steam bath relaxes the whole body, while purging it off all harmful elements. This has the effect of calming the mind as well. It causes stress to melt away and leaves individuals feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. TOXICITY Time-saving has almost become synonymous with eating packaged and processed foods, such as fast food and other sodium-laden snacks. This adds a huge strain to the liver and kidneys during the digestion process. The remnants of harmful preservatives can sometimes remain in the body, slowing down metabolism and causing bigger health threats over a period of time. Benefits – Herbal steam bath removes every harmful toxin from the body through prolonged, excessive sweating. This eases the load on the kidneys and liver and improves digestion as well. The herbal steam bath is an ideal ayurvedic therapy for detoxing the entire body and can be done as often as suggested by a practitioner for long term benefits such as improvement in overall health and lifestyle. In combination with other treatments such as Shirodhara for stress-relief, Podikizhi for joint ailments, Nasyam or Thalam for treating sinuses, targeted issues can be relieved. Ayush implements the best detox therapies to ensure all your health issues are healed holistically and your body feels refreshed and ready to take on the world.

ALLEVIATING ARTHRITIS WITH AYURVEDA

ARTHRITIS WITH AYURVEDA

March 26, 2020 ALLEVIATING ARTHRITIS WITH AYURVEDA Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Arthritis refers to the inflammation of joints which can occur in numerous ways. The most predominant forms of arthritis are Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs due to numerous reasons whereas RA is a result of an autoimmune disorder. They also differ in how they affect joints, with RA causing the membrane that protects and lubricates joints becomes inflamed, while Osteoarthritis involves the wearing away of the cartilage surrounding the bones at joints. CAUSES OF ARTHRITIS Arthritis occurs due to numerous reasons and can affect individuals of all ages, though it is more often seen in adults over the age of 60. Arthritis due to injuries – This is called post-traumatic arthritis and is caused by the wearing out of a joint due to physical injuries. This speeds up the degradation of the bone and cartilage and leads to arthritis. Hereditary Arthritis – Though people with parents or close relatives with arthritis are more susceptible to suffer from it, this is also dependent on individual factors. It only means that the risk is increased. Arthritis due to infection – Arthritis may also be a symptom of a larger disease or issue such as certain skin conditions, gout, cancer, diabetes or lifestyle habits such as excessive drug usage or smoking. Arthritis caused by autoimmune diseases – Lupus and RA are examples of this. This type of arthritis is a result of the immune system attacking itself. It can have long term detrimental effects on joint health.   SYMPTOMS Arthritis presents itself with several symptoms: Pain in joints, or a particular joint during activity or while at rest Stiffness of joints, especially in the mornings Swelling of the joints and the area around the joints Redness and tenderness around the joints Decrease in range of motion   REDUCING RISK OF ARTHRITIS While factors such as age (older individuals have higher risk of arthritis), sex (women tend to suffer from arthritis more than men), and genes cannot be modified, certain other lifestyle changes can help keep arthritis at bay. Maintaining a healthy diet to avoid obesity, giving up smoking, following guidelines to prevent joint strain can all help reduce the risk of arthritis. PODIKIZHI FOR ARTHRITIS Podikizhi comprises of two things – ‘podi’ which means powder and ‘kizhi’ which means bolus. It involves tying a heated mixture of several powdered ayurvedic herbs in a cloth bolus and gently applying it to localized regions of pain. It relieves the pressure and reduces inflammation in the parts of the body where it is placed. Gently massaging with the Podikizhi on affected areas can produce significant results. It works on the principle of fomentation, or removal of toxins from the body by establishing a process of excessive sweating. Podikizhi helps in curing Kapha-Vata  imbalance of the doshas. Excess Kapha is removed from the body, relieving joint pain and arthritis. Symptoms of arthritis such as swelling and inflammation are instantly relieved by podikizhi therapy. Any numbness, stiffness or  immobility in joints like the knees, elbows, shoulders and even fingers can be reduced by applying podikizhi on the affected joints. Depending on the severity of the arthritis, the therapy may be repeated. Since arthritis is a disease which can only be treated but not cured, podikizhi can be very helpful in managing all joint pain associated with arthritis. Regular ayurvedic treatments can improve quality of life and enhance mental well-being.

TREATING INSOMNIA WITH AYURVEDA

INSOMNIA WITH AYURVEDA

March 26, 2020 TREATING INSOMNIA WITH AYURVEDA Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles In today’s increasingly fast-paced world, one common problem which is affecting 30% of the population is insomnia. Insomnia refers to the inability of individuals to fall asleep or maintain sleep. This leads to sleepless nights of tossing and turning and over a period of time results in prolonged feelings of tiredness. Insomnia can disrupt sleeping patterns and can alter the sleep-wake cycle of the human body. Insomnia and Depression Depression is a leading cause of insomnia. The 21st century has the largest numbers of depression sufferers and among these, insomnia is a major threat. Insomnia also furthers the effects of depression in the long run, making it harder to treat. Lack of sleep can stimulate suicidal thoughts, self-depreciating thoughts and more, if left unchecked. Insomnia and Stress Stress is a major modern problem which almost every individual faces on an almost daily basis. Be it work, school or even family affairs, stress causes a major negative impact in day to day life. The pressure endured due to constant online presence, working late into the night, need to respond immediately, all increase stress while sudden events like deaths or unexpected loss of jobs can also lead to major stress which in turn causes insomnia. This type of insomnia caused by stress is usually characterized by extreme difficulty in falling asleep due to constant worrying thoughts. Insomnia and Anxiety Anxiety, or incessant worrying over issues can also lead to insomnia. Anxious persons typically seem high strung and unable to cope with social situations, major events or even basic responsibilities. Insomnia due to anxiety is very widespread and can worsen symptoms of anxiety as well. Insomnia and Diet Diet is a major factor for insomnia. Consuming caffeinated beverages and alcohol can all cause disruption in sleep. Nicotine must also be avoided to ensure good sleeping hours. Heavy meals just before bed can also lead to insomnia. However, intake of a healthier diet can immediately show a decrease in insomnia symptoms. Insomnia and Lifestyle Drastic changes in lifestyle, like a sudden stoppage of regular physical activity, can cause insomnia. Naps, however short, can make it difficult to fall asleep at night. Spending long waking hours in front of a screen is a leading reason for the rise in insomnia in the current scenario. SHIRODHARA FOR INSOMNIA Shirodhara is one of the prominent therapies prescribed for insomnia. Shirodhara, comprising of two words, ‘shiro’ meaning head, ‘dhara’ meaning pouring in stream or sprinkling, is an ayurvedic treatment which involves a herbal oil being dripped over the forehead for an average duration of 60 minutes. Ayurveda considers insomnia to be an imbalance of the dosha in the body. During the Shirodhara treatment, the rhythmic pouring of streams of oil over the forehead, relaxes the individual and allows them to reach a state of ‘Turya’. Turya is a state of peace and awareness which is almost meditative in nature. This causes immediate stress-relief and curtails all anxious thoughts and feelings, having an immediate effect of reducing insomnia. It also helps relax the hypothalamus, and normalizes hormonal function leading to a good, sound, undisturbed sleep. Shirodhara can be done at regular intervals, depending on the intensity of the insomnia. Regular ayurvedic therapy can relax the mind and improve quality of life considerably. Other therapies usually prescribed for insomnia include Takradhara, Shirovasthi, Thalam, Thalapothichil, etc. depending on the condition of the sufferer, other interfering factors and health issues, etc.

3 COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AYURVEDA

About Ayurveda

December 20, 2019 3 COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AYURVEDA Contact Us +65 6398 0415 admin@ayurvedasg.com Recent Articles Ayurveda is the science of life, which has been in practice for over 1000 years and it has started to gain awareness in the modern world as an alternative form of medicine. Ayurveda has its origins in nature-derived solutions to ailments and therapies which help relieve symptoms. It is rooted in the belief that the symphony of the mind and body should work in harmony and is what keeps an individual healthy and peaceful. However, over the years, it has fallen prey to several widespread misconceptions owing to the many unqualified practitioners out there.   AYURVEDA IS NOT A SCIENCE – FALSE Ayurveda is most certainly a science with its name being a testament to the same (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) This form of treatment is not a random practice but is a combination of treatments which have been put together by skilled physicians in the past. These were trained physicians, with careful consideration and definitive study, who have compiled these into treatments. When Ayurveda is practiced in its most authentic form, it is effective, safe, and free of any harmful effects. AYURVEDA IS SLOW ACTING – FALSE Ayurveda is not a quick fix or is it an instantaneous answer to every health issue. Like every medical science, dutiful and regular ayurvedic practices are sure to impact individuals positively and alleviate symptoms of various illnesses and in certain cases, the effect is quite immediate. However, haphazard treatment and massages without proper posture, ingredients, study, and professional help can do more harm than good. AYURVEDA CAN BE SELF-PRESCRIBED – FALSE Ayurveda, is also ultimately, a medical science. This means that ayurvedic treatment and medicine must be prescribed by an Ayurvedic medical practitioner. Self-diagnosis, off the counter ‘ayurvedic’ medicines, improperly administered Ayurvedic massages, can all have a negative impact on individuals. Mental wellbeing and physical health go hand in hand. Ayurveda aims at targeting the root cause of any problem and using therapies, massages, and medicine to treat the same. Keep your dosha balanced and your life ailment free with regular Ayurvedic therapy from qualified specialists, at Ayush ayurvedic and experience a new way of life.
